MediaTek Acquires ADI's Mobile Phone IC Business for US$350 Mln

According to Economic Daily News of Taiwan, Taiwanese fabless IC design house MediaTek announced on September 10 the acquisition of US-based ADI's (Analog Devices) mobile phone IC assets and personnel for US$350 million, with the aim to tap China's 3G TD-SCDMA (Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) market. Pursuant to the agreement, MediaTek will take over ADI's Othello radio and SoftFone baseband chipset product lines, including products based on GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications), GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), EDGE, WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access), and TD-SCDMA technologies. Also included in the deal are 400 R&D personnel specializing in product development and customer support, along with ADI's existing customer base, numbering Samsung and LG among others. Approved by both companies' board of directors, this deal is expected to close toward the end of 2007.
